The project was initiated in 2005 and finalized in 2006. The objective of this project was the substitution of mercury vapour lamps by high pressured sodium lamps.

Aims and Objectives of this Sustainable Energy Action

The main objectives of these projects were:

  • Reduction of the annual costs of electricity supply for public lighting in the municipalities involved;
  • Reduction of the costs with the maintenance of public lightning equipment;
  • Improvement of light quality, ensuring additional positive impacts, e.g. improving traffic and personal safety, optimized illumination of cultural heritage, etc.
  • Environmental impacts: GHG emissions reductions, etc.

Results and Impacts

ILUPub

  • Reduction of the electricity consumption in 23,979 kWh (about 53%);
  • Reduction of CO2 emissions - 11.27 tonnes;
  • Reduction of the electricity consumption costs - €2,350 (53% of the public lighting bill);
  • Reduction of the costs related to equipments maintenance;
  • Reduction of the lamp waste.

ILUMape

Savings at cost (€) and electricity consumption (%) level, by municipality (annual values):

Avis €52,250.16 61.3%
Campo Maior €5,452.40 55.9%
Castelo de Vide €32,692.04 54.0%
Elvas €54,797.48 61.3%
Marvão €9,011.08 56.7%
Monforte €38,249.36 45.9%
Portalegre €91,010.36 58.3%
Sousel €17,015.96 59.2%
Avis €52,250.16 61.3%
Total €300,478.84 42.2%

Lessons Learnt

There are many municipalities which have non-efficient public lighting systems. The implementation of new technologies, such as the case of ILUMape project, the change in the public lightning resulted in an annual reduction of about 40% in the bill of the electricity, due to the reduction of the electric energy consumption of about 3750 kWh.

The Partners and Stakeholders

This project was developed by the AREANATejo (Regional Agency for Energy and Environment of North Alentejo and Tejo) in cooperation with the local authorities of each municipality. This is a good example of how the different municipalities of a Region can work together and cooperate through the Regional Energy Agency.

How this Action could be Replicated

This action can be replicated in any street of any municipality that aims to reduce the energy consumption of the public lighting.
