Huelva is a province of southern Spain, in the western part of the autonomous community of Andalusia, bordered by Portugal. As a Covenant Coordinator, the Province of Huelva is engaging and supporting municipalities in the territory to develop and submit SEAPs. Part of this process includes awareness-raising and reaching out to citizens. Thirty-eight (38) municipalities participated in the 2nd Huelva Provincial Energy Week held on 21-27 March 2011, linked to the Sustainable Energy Europe Campaign (SEEC). Organized by the Province of Huelva, and part of the ENERGY FOR MAYORS project activities, this Week had a high rate of attendance, helping to focus attention on sustainable energy – with events taking place in Alosno, Minas de Riotinto, Jabugo and the Granja Escuela de la Diputación de Huelva.
In addition to this a course on the development and implementation of a Sustainable Energy Action Plans was held for administrative and technical municipal staff. Addressing participants, Ms. María José Cortil, Director for Environment and Renewable Energy of the Province of Huelva, stated: “Every day municipalities become more aware of the importance of reaching citizens with concrete and simple actions that can improve the quality of life for citizens, with a growing recognition of their own important local contribution in the fight against climate change.” Building on these and many other energy highlights in the Province of Huelva, Ms. José Cortil was proud to hand over prepared SEAPs of Covenant of Mayors signatories of her Province during the EUSEW 2011 in Brussels to Mr. Roman Doubrava of the European Commission Directorate-General for Energy (DG ENER).
