EnergyCities - where action and vision meet

Energy Cities is the European Association of local authorities inventing their energy future. The association, with a Board of Directors from 11 European cities, was created in 1990 and now represents now more than 1,000 towns and cities in 30 countries. It has offices in Brussels (BE) and Besançon (FR). It is an Official Associate of the Sustainable Energy Europe Campaign.

Energy Cities is an independent organisation funded by the members fees, contracts with the European Commission or national institutions and partially private sponsors. These financing sources enable the Association to lead or participate in the following actions: European projects and campaigns, annual conferences and study tours for their members. Energy Cities benefits from its experienced team’s project management skills and participates in numerous European campaigns and projects in the framework of programmes such as INTERREG, CONCERTO or Intelligent Energy Europe (IEE). The goal is to promote the exchange of experience between members and aid local project.

To achieve this it sets out to strengthen activities and skills in the field of sustainable energy while representing the interests of members and influencing the policies and proposals made by European Union institutions in the fields of energy, environmental protection and urban policy as well as to develop and promote initiatives through exchange of experiences, the transfer of know-how and the implementation of joint projects.

It organises a two day rendezvous every year. These annual rendezvous are hosted by a town or city member of Energie-Cités and are organised in a different country each year. The subjects dealt with are highly topical and have a European dimension. Energy Cities has selected members who have been involved in innovative urban projects for many years. Visiting these members allows one to better understand how things function in these cities and use this information as a source of inspiration in their own municipality.

Since 2009, Energy Cities has been leading the Covenant of Mayors Office, in cooperation with Climate Alliance, CEMR, Fedarene and Eurocities.
