The Centre for Renewable Energy Sources (CRES) is the Greek national centre for Renewable Energy Sources (RES), Rational Use of Energy (RUE) and Energy Saving (ES). Within the ENNEREG project, CRES is responsible for activities in the Cyclades.

DAFNI - Network of Aegean Islands for Sustainability
DAFNI is a voluntary scheme of island communities aiming to promote a sustainable future, through concerted action. Every member of the network is committed to achieving a number of concrete targets, which are subject to external certification. Currently, 37 island municipalities of the Aegean Sea are members of the network.
Ios-Aegean Energy Agency
The Ios-Aegean Energy Agency is associated with the Network of Sustainable Islands of the Aegean Sea (DAFNI) which actually comprises 37 insular communities. Its strategic target is to increase the islands' energy production from RES, as well as to promote energy efficiency technologies and practices.

Towards Sustainable Energy Communities – delivering on the Covenant of Mayors
Intelligent Energy - Europe (IEE) Conference

Representatives from cities leading on sustainable energy actions gathered together in Brussels on Monday 18 March, at a European Commission forum organised by ManagEnergy. The event marked the commitment of 189 communities in going beyond the EU’s 2020 climate and energy targets. The cumulative results of the sustainable energy action plans are projected to be 2475080 MWh per annum of RES production and 5327473 MWh per annum of primary energy savings.

Regions 202020 Workshop and Technical Visits

The Regions 202020 Workshop and Technical Visits, organised by EVE and Fedarene on 8-9 November 2012, was open to ENNEREG partners, Fedarene partners and selected invited participants. The Workshop on Thursday 8 November 2012 was a good opportunity to discuss interesting issues related to the management of energy efficiency at a regional level, and to share ENNEREG partner’s experience and good practices. The Workshop was followed on the morning of Friday 9 November by two technical visits, both in Zamudio, 10 km from Bilbao. Presentations are now available on the events page of the Regions 202020 website.

Transfer of knowledge in the field of sustainable use of energy

The morning session of the ENNEREG International Conference in Poznan, Poland presented the ENNEREG Project and Regions 202020 Network as well as the Regional SEAPs for Wielkopolska and Pomerania, as well as Regions 202020 Good Practice case studies and Sustainable Energy Projects (SEPs) at the regional and inter-regional levels from the ENNEREG Pioneer regions. After lunch, a number of experience exchange workshops were organised on relevant topics. The event was followed by a Replication Workshop on 23 May 2012 oriented towards other Polish regions, addressing monitoring aspects of the regional SEAP.

CRES is organizing a conference “Innovative technologies for buildings. The role of Municipalities”, on 2nd of March 2011, in Athens. The event is addressed to the Municipalities, (mayors, engineers, etc) all over Greece and is supported by the Central Union of Municipalities in Greece. The programme will include presentations of relative European projects in which CRES is involved (10Action, ENNEREG, etc), the initiative of the Covenant of Mayors, best practices, state of art RES&EE technologies and financing issues.

and the role of island authorities in sustainable energy planning

Σκοπός του συνεδρίου ήταν η ανάδειξη των νέων ευκαιριών και προκλήσεων που παρουσιάζονται για τις νησιωτικές περιοχές από το νέο ευρωπαϊκό θεσμικό πλαίσιο για την κλιματική αλλαγή καθώς και των δυνατοτήτων από τη χρήση μοχλευόμενων πόρων για την υποστήριξη ενεργειακών επενδύσεων τα επόμενα χρόνια.
The conference presented the emergence of new opportunities and challenges presented to the islands from the new European institutional framework for climate change and the possibilities of using leveraged funds to support energy investments in the coming years.

- 10 municipalities from the Cyclades Islands region have joined the Covenant of Mayors initiative and have submitted Sustainable Energy Action Plans (SEAPs)
- 15 islands from the region have joined the Pact of Islands initiative
The region comprises of a group of approximately 220 islands. 24 of the 220 islands are inhabited. The region consists of 19 municipalities.
At 2005, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was 18.831 € showing a 31% growing from 2000.
During the last forty years the Cyclades have become one of the most famous tourist destinations in Greece. Apart from tourism, Cyclades economic activities include traditional agriculture and fishery, mining and ship construction.
One of the major characteristics of the region is the geographical isolation and also the land split which causes severe communication and access obstacles.
The region still lacks specific technical infrastructure (marine installations, water supply, soil process installations, etc). One of the most important problems is the water shortage that the islands are facing, not only because of climate change but also due to non-rational use of the water resources.
Electricity consumption in year 2008: 750.365 MWh
2 islands, out of the 24, are connected to the mainland. However the planned interconnection project which is under realisation aims at connecting 3 more islands in the 1st phase and 3 more islands during the 2nd phase.

The region of South Aegean has a strong representation in the Network of Sustainable Aegean Islands (DAFNI). At regional level, its aim is to support the islands to implement their sustainable energy action plans, realize innovative sustainable energy projects within their territories and assist them to meet their CO2 emissions reduction targets. In this framework, the region organises regional public information and awareness events for the support of the Covenant of Mayors and the Pact of Islands initiatives. At European level, its aim is to take part in the networks that are being formulated, support the coordinated promotional activities that are in line with the targets of the region and contribute to the development of a tighter co-operation among European regions.
Note: The Municipality of Poseidonia, which provided a letter of support for the project belongs to the South Aegean Region.
The Sustainable Energy Action Plan (SEAP) for the Cyclades Islands is being developed as part of the ENNEREG project.
Sustainable Energy Action Plan for Cyclades
[EN] The Regional Authority of South Aegean takes action in the territory of Cyclades islands towards sustainable development and the fight against climate change at regional level and commits to support island Local Authorities to achieve their commitment regarding reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and meet the targets set by the European Union for year 2020.

Report on ENNEREG Knowledge Transfer Workshops
Experience from the ENNEREG Regions [EN] This document reports and evaluates each of the 4 Knowledge Transfer Workshops that were organised among regional partners of the ENNEREG project. The main aim of these workshops was to ensure cross-regional transfer of experience within the various cooperation topics (Sustainable Energy Themes) of the project. During the project, the ENNEREG partners have worked in the development of sustainable energy action plans (SEAP) in their represented regions and in the promotion of sustainable energy projects (SEP). The objective of this document is to present how they intend to continue their efforts after the end of the project, developing the activities planned in the regional SEAP and ensuring the attraction of the necessary resources to promote sustainable energy projects.
Some of the SEAPs defined with the support of the project have been approved by the respective administrations and others still need to be matured to be accepted at the regional level and to be implemented. Thus, the situation is not the same in every region, and the approach to work in sustainable energy is not the same either. This document summarizes the common as well as the specific aspects about how the regions expect to organize and carry on the work on sustainable energy in the next future.
Development of ENNEREG Regional Sustainable Energy Action Plans
Experience from the ENNEREG Regions [EN] This document includes an evaluation of the achievements of the activities carried out in the ENNEREG partner’s regions related to the development of Sustainable Energy Action Plans (SEAP) and promoting sustainable energy since the beginning of the project. The document shows the added value of the ENNEREG project in the 12 participating regions, which not only have very different characteristics with respect to their size and their social features and the use of energy, but they also have had different starting points for this process.

The regional and local authorities committed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions have numerous sources of financing to develop their sustainable energy action plans (SEAPs) and finance the sustainable energy projects (SEPs) defined in them, including local and regional authorities own resources, municipal, regional and national subsidies or public-private partnerships.
The objective of this document is to present in a general way the possibilities of financing for SEAPs and SEPs at a regional level, and to summarize the financing tools available at national and regional level for the 12 regions participating in the ENNEREG Project.
Replacement of public lights in Santorini - ENNEREG Good Practice in Energy Efficient Products
[EN] On Santorini island, in the coastline of the bays of Perissa, Perivolos, Agios Georgios, 115 steel street lighting poles with low efficient lamps were replaced by new ones, made of recyclable plastic, with high efficient lamps. The new poles do not need yearly maintenance (painting), and the new lamps consume 67% less energy than the old ones.
District heating in a municipal swimming pool - ENNEREG Good Practice in Energy Services
[EN] Implementation of District heating system in the municipal swimming pool at Hermoupolis, in Syros Island, with the use of the surplus of thermal energy production from the neighboring thermal electricity power station of PPC (Public Power Company).

Desalination from wind in Milos - ENNEREG Good Practice in Renewable Energy
[EN] Milos island, Cyclades, is one of the many places in the Aegean Sea with water deficiency, mainly during the summer and the tourist season. The desalination plant constructed by ITA SA in 2008 using wind energy and modern reverse osmosis technology has been proven as an ideal solution both for the environment and the quality of life.
PV in a traditional Cycladic neighbourhood - ENNEREG Good Practice in Renewable Energy
[EN] On Syros island, photovoltaic (PV) systems have been installed in 12 autonomous systems at various points of a picturesque village, Poseidonia. It was an initiative of the former Mayor of Poseidonia in Syros island, under the Covenant of Mayors Initiative.
RES and Energy Efficiency actions in schools - ENNEREG Good Practice in Energy Efficient Buildings
[EN] 15 public primary and secondary school buildings will be renovated in order to improve the energy efficiency, reduce the energy consumption and install renewable energy applications. Those school buildings are located in the islands/municipalities of Andros, Santorini, Ios, Kea, Naxos and Sifnos in Cyclades, and Lipsi in Dodecanese, in South Aegean region, in Greece.
Geothermal heat pumps in a dwelling at Mykonos - ENNEREG Good Practice in Renewable Energy
[EN] A Horizontal Geothermal Loop with Ground Sources Heat Pump was constructed in a two floor dwelling at Mykonos Island, with 151 m2 of total air conditioned area. The system was designed in order to cover the heating, cooling and hot water needs of the house.
Energy Academy - ENNEREG Good Practice in Intelligent Energy Education

The energy academy is a training programme for local energy officers in the Aegean Region – Cyclades and Dodecanese islands, on Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and Energy Efficiency.
The Energy Academy is an advanced training programme on energy issues for municipal staff of the Aegean Islands region. The programme aims to assist islands in their obligations (e.g. Covenant of Mayors, Pact of Islands) and their goals regarding CO2 emissions’ reduction through capacity building, so that their ability to be actively involved in energy planning and to participate in strategic decision making is supported and enhanced.
Potable Water Unit, Syros Cyclades, Greece - ENNEREG Good Practice in Energy Efficient Products
[EN] Most of the islands in Cyclades region have drinking water shortage. In Syros, local people were used to purchase plastic bottles of drinking water to cover their needs until local authority inspired the idea of the desalination of sea water and its distribution through slot machines. The project was very successful!
Desalination on Amorgos Island - ENNEREG Good Practice in Energy Efficient Products
[EN] The Project is designed to cover the steeply increasing needs for potable water in the villages of Egiali, on Amorgos island, supplying high quality water to comply with the highest standards on a 24 hour basis, at a remarkably lower cost than the present.
Microgrid in Kythnos Island - ENNEREG Good Practice in Renewable Energy
[EN] The system in Gaidouromantra, Kythnos is a 3-phase Microgrid composed of the overhead power lines and a communication cable running in parallel. It is electrifying 12 houses with a 1-phase electricalservice in a small valley in Kythnos, an island in the cluster of Cyclades situated in the middle of the Aegean Sea. The grid and safety specifications for the house connections respect the technical solutions of the Public Power Corporation, which is the local electricity utility.

ENNEREG Regional network establishment and approach for SEAP development - Summary document
Publication [EN] This document has been drafted based on the information provided by the regional partners of the ENNEREG project, at an early stage of the development of the ENNEREG foreseen activities and describes the activities that are planned in each region for the SEAP development. The regions shall work in this task with different approaches adapted to the characteristics of the region and its governance structures and will provide at a later phase of the project a description of the performed activities and update it in a second phase.

First phase of implementing sustainable energy projects (SEPs) in the ENNEREG regions
Publication [EN] This report aims to evaluate the first phase of implementing sustainable energy projects (SEPs) in the ENNEREG regions. The report covers the period from May 2010 to April 2011 (first twelve months of ENNEREG`s project time). The report comprises a description of SEP measures in each region, especially with respect to Performance Indicators, which were defined with the start of the ENNEREG project.
1st ENNEREG Knowledge Transfer Workshop 8-10 June 2011 – Syros, Cyclades Island, Greece
Conclusions [EN] The first Knowledge transfer workshop of ENNEREG project, organised by CRES and ECNet, took place on Syros island on 8-10 May 2011. Participants in this event were informed about the prospects for sustainable developement of the Cyclades islands and wanted to learn more about the ELENA facility. Also it was a great oportunity for them to meet their colleagues from other regions and share common problems and visions. They included representatives of regional authorities, municipalities and development agencies from the Cyclades, Dodekanisa, North Aegean and Ionian islands, Greece.

On the island Syros in the Cyclades, Greece, water comes from desalination units. The machine includes the system for cleaning water and the system that receives coins. Insert 20 cents to obtain 10 litres of potable water.
