Pioneer Region

Schleswig-Holstein, Germany

Summary

Schleswig-Holstein is the only German federal state that lies between two seas. The world’s busiest artificial waterway, the Kiel Canal, connects these two seas. The region has a coastline of 1,190 km and 21,700 km of rivers and streams. The landscape of Schleswig-Holstein is rather unique with a variation of high cliffs, marshlands, geestland and the eastern hill’s countryside. Characteristic features of the landscape are the so-called Knicks, hedge and wall combinations intended to mark the boundaries between fields.

Approximately 1.7% of the total surface area of the land is covered by its 300 lakes. Furthermore, there are seven islands that belong to the region. For Schleswig-Holstein, the landscape represents an invaluable resource whose diversity, uniqueness and beauty must be protected, a space for living and recreation to be maintained and safeguarded. 2.9 % of Schleswig-Holstein's surface area is designated as nature conservation area.

The State started to support the energy production from Wind already in the eighties. That is why Schleswig-Holstein is one of the most experienced wind energy regions in Europe today. By the end of 2005 the installed capacity estimated 2.300 MW on 2650 machines. More than 30 % of the electricity equivalent consumed in the regions originates from wind energy.
