Pioneer Region

Greater Manchester, United Kingdom

Summary

Greater Manchester (GM) covers the areas of ten Local Authorities (LAs), who together comprise the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (AGMA).

In May 2009, the Environment Commission gave formal approval for the development of a Sustainable Energy Action Plan for Greater Manchester.

Led by Manchester: Knowledge Capital (M:KC), this process commenced with an intense phase of research and stakeholder engagement.

During October and November 2009, over 20 representatives from the public, private and NGO sectors participated in workshops to develop future energy scenarios for Greater Manchester. The scenarios were developed using Carbon Captured's Greenhouse Gas Inventory Protocol (GRIP) Inventory and Scenario Tool.

In April 2010, M:KC appointed ARUP to undertake the final phase of stakeholder engagement and to produce the action plan. The work was completed in June 2010. This first SEAP for GM, providing a vital contribution towards a sustainable energy system for GM.
